The Jewish Community notes with deep regret that the request to move the traditional torchlight procession on April 25th from the evening of Friday the 24th to the evening of Thursday the 23rd, initially approved by the City, was subsequently rejected following opposition expressed during a subsequent meeting of a “technical panel” of several partisan organizations and associations.
Consequently, for the first time this year, the Jewish Community, due to its coincidence with the Shabbat, will not be able to participate in the torchlight procession commemorating Italy’s liberation from Nazi-Fascist rule: this is certainly a very serious matter.
The Community will, however, participate in all other events held on April 25th and invites the authorities, Resistance Associations, Memorial Institutes, and all citizens to participate in the events it promotes to celebrate Liberation Day:
- the remembrance, on April 14th at 6.00 pm in the Community, of Giuliana Fiorentino Tedeschi, deported to Auschwitz and to whom a garden in Piazza Bernini will be dedicated in the coming days;
- the Emanuele Artom march, which will take place from platform 17 of Porta Nuova to Piazzetta Primo Levi on April 15th at 11.00 am;
- The conference, which will be held at the Community Social Center on Sunday, April 26th at 5:30 PM, by Liliana Picciotto, an authoritative scholar at the CDEC, on Jewish participation in the Resistance, is the result of many years of painstaking work, which has been published on the “Jewish Resistance Movement of Italy” portal and is the subject of a book to be released in the coming weeks.
