The Jewish Community of Turin and the Waldensian Church express their satisfaction and heartfelt appreciation for the unanimous approval by the Piedmont Regional Council of the law establishing February 17 as a day in the Piedmont Region’s civil calendar in commemoration of the Letters Patent of King Charles Albert, which in 1848, putting an end to centuries of discrimination and persecution, recognized civil and political rights for Waldensians and Jews.
Sincere thanks go, in particular, to the bill’s first signatory, Monica Canalis, who worked tirelessly and tenaciously throughout the legislative initiative’s lengthy process to achieve this important goal.
The new law is intended not only to celebrate a significant moment in Piedmont’s history, but also to encourage us to defend the achievement of religious freedom in our country within a context of a secular state and peaceful coexistence and collaboration between different religious denominations, which represent a richness for our society.
