On Monday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m., the Institute of Contemporary History (Vicolo S. Spirito 11, Ferrara) will host the presentation of the book “I campi di Salò” (Einaudi, 2025) by Carlo Spartaco Capogreco, full professor of Contemporary History at the University of Calabria and scientific advisor to the Center for Contemporary Jewish Documentation, the magazine “Mondo Contemporaneo,” and the National Coordination of “Paesaggi della Memoria.”

The idea behind this book is, first and foremost, to provide the reader—after a brief review of the history of fascist anti-Semitism since 1938—with a comprehensive, yet lacking, territorial mapping of the Jewish internment implemented by the Republic of Salò from December 1, 1943, and its connections with the deportation from Italy, conducted by the German occupation authorities, as part of the “Final Solution to the Jewish Problem.” Capogreco examines the context of anti-Jewish persecution by the RSI, primarily determined (at the end of that year) by the passing of the baton from the Germans to the Italians in managing roundups in the Italian peninsula. With an in-depth historical, territorial, and archival survey, he focuses on all the “provincial camps,” contextualizing them within the broader context of fascist civil internment. It therefore does not neglect a comprehensive look at the years 1940-45 and the complex intertwining of geographical sites and political-police functions, relating to Jewish internment and the Holocaust; without excluding the Nazi concentration camps that operated in Italy.

In conversation with the author: Amedeo Spagnoletto, Director of MEIS, and Giorgio Rizzoni, Vice President of ISCO.
The activity is part of the events for April 25th.
