On Holocaust Remembrance Day, two Stumbling Stones placed in Turin will be revisited by two fourth-grade classes from the Galileo Ferraris High School in Settimo Torinese, led by Professor Gabriele Castellani, in front of the homes from which Franco Levi and Oreste Levi were deported and later murdered in Auschwitz.
We ask ourselves, “How was it possible?” in Germany and Italy, the slide toward a totalitarian regime that, by centralizing power, excluding all opposition and pluralism, and affirming the “superiority of the Aryan race,” was able to deport, torture, and eliminate Jews in extermination camps without them being able to defend themselves.
The story of Oreste and Franco Levi will be remembered by Lucio Levi, former President of the European Federalist Movement (MFE), who oversaw the placing of the Stumbling Stones as part of the European program launched by Gunter Demnig.
