The presentation of the new regional law was attended by the first signatory Monica Canalis, journalist Francesco Antonioli, constitutionalist Giovanni Boggero, president of the Interfaith Committee Valentino Castellani, president of the Jewish Community Dario Disegni, sociologist Stefania Palmisano, president of the Waldensian Cultural Center Foundation Bruna Peyrot, pastor Giuseppe Platone, the Honorable Valdo Spini, and the president of the Turin Consistory Sergio Velluto.
On March 30, the new regional law commemorating the events of 1848, the year in which the Kingdom of Sardinia granted civil and political rights to the Waldensian and Jewish minorities, was presented in Turin.
Thanks to the law unanimously approved by the Regional Council on February 24, Piedmont continues to be a beacon of dialogue and the rule of law, through the establishment of a regional day every February 17 to commemorate past events and raise awareness of the values of coexistence and tolerance.
During the presentation, the importance of dialogue between religions and the interaction between religion and politics emerged forcefully, to strengthen the law and the value of religious freedom in an era characterized by post-secularism and the return of religious wars. Religions can be agents of peace and coexistence, in pluralism and respect for diversity, playing a role in community cohesion and not just private introspection.
Remembering Piedmont’s unique history can therefore heal the painful wounds of the past, in a land where religious affiliation has for centuries led to bloody conflicts and unjust segregation. It can also stimulate reflection on the recognition of all faiths and the meaning of citizenship for minorities, not only religious ones, and ultimately encourage the full inclusion of all current members of the Piedmontese community.
The hope expressed at the conference is that good practices such as the Interfaith Committee of the City of Turin will extend to other municipalities and that Piedmontese law will encourage parliamentary legislative initiatives on the issue of religious freedom.
