It was the ideal audience for discussion, but due to time constraints, this was only partially possible.
In fact, the UCEI’s intention in promoting the evening was not so much to organize a debate among diverse opinions, but rather to raise awareness of the text approved by the Senate and currently under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies, to illustrate its content and parliamentary process, to clarify any doubts, and to address any objections.
It was therefore logical that the introductory remarks were given by four parliamentarians in favor of the bill, belonging to different parties and political groups. The four subsequent presentations, scheduled before the opening of the debate, were intended to demonstrate through firsthand experience the gravity of the phenomenon of contemporary anti-Semitism, including in our city.
These interventions and testimonies are therefore necessary to understand what we’re talking about when we talk about this law and when we talk about anti-Semitism today (because many speak about both without knowledge of the facts). However, they perhaps took up too much space, inevitably compressing the time allocated to the presentation of doubts and criticisms of the law and the related responses. To my great disappointment, given that many had already left the room by the time the floor was opened for comments from the audience, there was no opportunity to hear and discuss the objections of those who fear that the bill limits freedom of expression. Instead, we heard almost exclusively opposing criticisms, those who consider the bill ineffective because it lacks repressive measures.
It’s difficult to communicate effectively when arguments that are convincing to some risk becoming evidence against others, and vice versa. Therefore, an evening like May 25th could never have satisfied everyone. Personally, I would have sought a way to leave more space and time for criticism and debate. Not because the UCEI can’t have a clear position in favor of the law, but precisely because effective communication should aim to convince those who disagree, and to convince someone, you have to listen to them and seriously consider their objections.
If it wasn’t the right evening, perhaps it would be useful to organize another.

Anna Segre

The evening entitled “Democratic Antibodies” on May 25th attracted a large and diverse audience: Jews and non-Jews, with diverse political views, and members of many groups and organizations.
