We look forward to seeing you for the fifth and final installment in the “Shots of History”<\/strong> series: lectures featuring master photographers who have captured crucial moments in Italian and international history and social change through their lenses. The lectures will be held on the occasion of the MEIS exhibition “Journey to Italy: Discovering Jewish Cultural Heritage.”<\/strong>
\nThe next meeting is scheduled for May 6th at 5:30 pm at the MEIS bookshop<\/strong> (Via Piangipane 81, Ferrara) and offers a retrospective look at one of the most extraordinary photographers of the 20th century: Julia Pirotte<\/strong>. To do so, we will premiere the documentary “You Have Courage, Madame”<\/strong> dedicated to her, with director Asaf Galay<\/strong>, producer Naama Pyrtiz<\/strong>, and cinematographer Avner Shahaf<\/strong>.
\nBorn in a Jewish town in Poland, Pirotte fled to France in 1939 and joined the Resistance against the Vichy regime<\/strong> with her sister. In Marseille, she lived in hiding, transporting weapons and false documents, maintaining her job as a newspaper photographer as a cover.
\nAfter her sister’s arrest and murder by the Nazis, Julia began intensively documenting the Resistance to ensure their struggle would not be forgotten. She miraculously survived and even managed to immortalize the liberation of Marseille.
\nAfter the war, she returned to Poland, where she worked as a photographer covering major postwar events such as the terrible 1946 Kielce pogrom against the Jewish community. Her shots for French tabloids and portraits of singer Edith Piaf are also famous.
\nDuring a conference, Picasso told her, “You have courage, Madame,” a phrase that gives the film its title. <\/p>\n
