On March 24, 1944, in Nazi-occupied Rome, the Fosse Ardeatine massacre took place, one of the capital’s most serious crimes of World War II.
In response to the partisan attack on Via Rasella on March 23, which killed 33 German soldiers, the Nazis decided to shoot ten Italians for every German killed.
The operation, led by Herbert Kappler, involved Jews, political opponents, partisans, and civilians rounded up at random. The massacre took place in the quarries on Via Ardeatina: 335 victims. Among those responsible was Erich Priebke, who fled to Argentina after the war, where he lived undisturbed until 1994, when he was located by a television crew. His trial began in Rome in 1996, sparking widespread public debate.
Thirty years after the trial, the MEIS is organizing a meeting in Ferrara, open to the public, to retrace those events and their uncertainties.
The event is scheduled for January 29th at 9:00 PM at the Sala Estense in Ferrara. There will be Stefano Nazzi, journalist and voice of the podcasts Indagini and Altre indagini, and historian Amedeo Osti Guerrazzi (University of Padua).
The event is free, but reservations are required at +39 342 5476621 or by email at eventi.meis@orologionetwork.it.
