Paradoxically, little is known about Jews. Questions raised in public or private about Judaism, Israel, and Zionism often reveal a profound sense of unease; it seems that in the West, there is a profound unspokenness that produces a distorted reality. Many, both on the right and the left, struggle to relate to the Jewish world. This difficulty—which over the past two centuries has produced a structured and widespread political language known as “anti-Semitism”—can only be addressed through knowledge. After the massacre committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent violent Israeli reaction in Gaza, the question has once again become central. Where is the line between legitimate criticism of the government of the State of Israel and open anti-Semitism? What does crossing that line entail? What does all this have to do with the values of democracy and freedom of thought? Gadi Luzzatto Voghera analyzes the issue in two ways: in the first part of this book, he offers a brief history of the Jews to provide a solid foundation for discussion. Then, in the second part, he openly addresses the most frequent and direct questions. This book on the Jews thus becomes a useful tool for anyone wishing to understand where the line should not be crossed, for the good of civil society as a whole.
