When care becomes resistance: true stories that teach us how to begin anew. The twenty profiles featured in this book are those of women who, in times of conflict, violence, and persecution, practiced the art of repair—through song, music, art, writing, poetry, philosophy, and political engagement. These are twenty women whose actions and choices—which, in some instances, cost them their lives—kept hope alive during the most challenging moments of recent history. Theirs are twenty stories from which we can draw inspiration to act with compassion in our present day, a time when flashpoints of war are multiplying and violent confrontation all too often seems to replace democratic discourse.
