The Jewish Brigade is a corps of the British Army formed in the summer of 1944, composed of Jews from British Mandate Palestine. The Brigade’s volunteers took part in the Second World War on the Senio River in Romagna, between March and April 1945. They subsequently played a valuable role in the humanitarian work of international relief organizations, saving tens of thousands of Jews returning from concentration camps. For this reason, the story of the Jewish Brigade represents much more than a simple military episode and deserves to be told in Italian, given the scant historiographical attention to this topic, and especially given the profound connection this chapter of Jewish history has with the postwar events in our country, devastated by bombing and Nazi occupation.
The study by Stefano Scaletta, a young researcher who spent two years of his doctorate in England and at Bar Ilan University in Israel, is based on documentary material from England, the United States, various European countries (including, of course, Italy) and on original Hebrew sources.
