On May 7, 2026, the Jewish Museum of Bologna will host a study day dedicated to the theme of Purim Sheni, the minor holidays established throughout history to celebrate salvation from dramatic events that threatened the lives of Jewish communities in Italy.
The meeting was conceived with the aim of investigating, for the first time in a comprehensive way, the origins, historical circumstances, and rites associated with these celebrations, offering an in-depth look at a little-known tradition of great cultural and identity value.
The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome for participants, followed by official greetings from Amedeo Spagnoletto, Director of the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah (MEIS), and Ivan Orsini, Director of the Jewish Museum of Bologna.
The first panel, titled “Salvation and History – Purim Shenì” and moderated by Alberto Cavaglion, will feature contributions from scholars and experts who will delve into various historical cases: Serena Di Nepi will analyze the so-called “Purim of Lead” in modern Rome, Gianfranco Di Segni will offer a general overview of the meaning of Purim Shenì, while Amedeo Spagnoletto and Adolfo Locci will present examples from Pitigliano and Padua, respectively.
After a time for discussion and Q&A, the day will continue in the afternoon with a second session, “The Earth Rebels. Tremors, Fires, and Floods,” moderated by Gabriele Fiorentino. This panel will explore episodes related to natural disasters and moments of crisis, from the 1742 Livorno tsunami and earthquake to Ferrara’s “little Purim,” and the Syracuse tradition, through contributions from scholars from various Italian and international universities, including Fabrizio Franceschini, Francesca Valentina Diana, Agnese Faccini, and Giuseppe Gabriele Campagna.
The initiative will conclude with a final session of reflections and questions, offering participants the opportunity to delve deeper into the topics covered and engage directly with the speakers.

Participation is free, with limited seating (maximum 30 people); reservations are recommended by writing to eventi@meisweb.it
